Dingle Bay is also home to a bottlenose dolphin named Fungie. Fungie showed up in 1983, and has since made the bay his home.
From 13th to the 16th century Dingle was a major port of trade, at times outdoing Limerick. In 1569 the town was listed as one of the 15 places in Ireland allowed to import wine. Wars in the 17th century wreaked havoc on Dingle.
