River Nore runs through the CITY of Kilkenny (not a town, as per the Local Government Act of 2001). In 2009 Kilkenny celebrated 400 years of being a city, and as of 2012 it has now been a city longer than it was ever considered a town (it got its town charter in 1207 from William Marshal). The city is known for its excellent Hurling teams, old castle, old pubs, and its 1985 Tidy Town victory (only city ever to win it).
The Dominican Friary near the base of the Rock of Cashel was built in the middle of the 13th century. It was abandoned in the 16th century.
